Let’s Talk About Pussy (Cat)

Considering the recent US election results, and the quickly growing list of Important People in the upcoming administration who have misogynistic tendencies, it is important to keep the issue of sexual harassment front and center in this country’s discourse, before all our workplaces revert to the horrific culture portrayed in the movie “The Wolf of Wall Street”.

Grabbing a woman in the hoo-ha is not OK, in the workplace or anywhere else, but we’re going to focus on the employment perspective in this post.  The reality is, that sexual harassment happens more often than people think, and what’s more, it is not just about inappropriate touching or worse, assault or rape. Women can be harassed in more subtle, non-violent ways – this could include displaying pornography in the office, talking about sexual acts, bringing in sexual toys to the office, speaking with sexual innuendo, rating women in the office and talking about them as sex objects (similar to the recent Harvard soccer team scandal where the male players rated the female team players and assigned them sexual positions), comments about women’s bodies, both in general or specifically directed to the victim, etc.  We could go on – but this is all considered harassment.  It can also take the form of discriminating against female employees for pay or promotion.

Many women don’t report sexual harassment when it happens.  Why not?  First, many are not sure if the subtle thing that happened or was said is really harassment.  Second, fear:  fear of office gossip, fear of losing one’s job and paycheck, fear of throwing one’s career down the toilet, fear that HR won’t do anything or will blame the victim.  All valid concerns, but there are laws to protect you from the harassment itself and the impact of reporting it.  If you think you have been sexually harassed by a Florida employer, contact us now at info at funeslaw.com or call 305-733-3561 for a free consultation about your situation.
